    Jennifer-

Good question. ACT! 2009 now supports Vista 64-bit OS. You are not alone many new computers are shipping with a 64-bit version… You can upgrade to ACT! 2009, or take the computer back and exchange it for the 32-bit version.

    Hope that helps.

Well, I seen you finally support Vista x64. Does that mean you now support Server 2003 x64 and XP Pro x64? I honestly haven’t given you guys much thought over the past year. After having to use a “creative” installation process, I found that how I run things works quite well. If there are any MUST have options in the new 2009, I may consider recommending an upgrade, if not… Virtualized systems is the way of the future.

    Gailand…

To be clear… *I* don’t support Vista 64-bit, *Sage* does. I just manage this blog trying to help people out :-)

Indeed virtual servers and such can solve a lot of problems, just make sure you are running in a supported configuration so if there are any issues, you can get support.

I have QuickBooks Pro 2009 and want to use Act 2008 to keep a large database. I want to be able to import members of the database into QB to reduce typing. I check with Act and was told that Act will not work with QB2009. A few years ago I was able to find a QB/Act link that allowed me to pull information from act into QB. Do you know of a link that works with QB Pro 2009 and Act2008?

    Thanks

    Bob

  5. Travis says:

My understanding is they have not release ACT! link for QB, that works with QuickBooks 2009. Unfortunately, I don’t know of an alternative for you at this time. Sage creates Peachtree, and there is a linking product to Peachtree for ACT! all versions in the last 4 years, which is available on their site for free. Hope that helps.

What Sage needs to do, but will most likely not do, is realize the true potential of this product.

#1 – Use SQL as SQL, and stop trying to own the whole process. Act can indeed use MySQL, and Sage knows it. Since that’s true, why not get of the proprietary and “lock-in to me only” mentality and begin opening this product up the way it could and should be?

#2 – Stop trying to lock themselves into the upgrade when MS does. Sage is fully aware their product will not merge with all kinds of versions of MS Office. And they like it that way. The two firms (MS and Sage) are entrenched in the idea that to make yearly revenue, they must lock out old versions.

If they were really trying to be innovative, they’d support Word 6 on up, WordPerfect 7 on up and OpenOffice 2. And the latter across all platforms. There’s no reason not to do it – except of course, they don’t want to and are in lock-step with MS.

#3 – There is absolutely NO reason why Act can’t run on 64-bit OSes. In fact, QuickBooks does it – in 32-bit mode no less. Server 2003 x64, Server 2008 x64, Vista x64 and Windows 7 x64 (October 22nd release date) can all run 32-bit apps like QuickBooks in 32-bit mode while still being a 64-bit OS.

I wonder why a firm like Sage wants to limit their sales to such a small market, when frankly, by opening this up to ODBC and SQL 1.1 standards (which BTW, is all that are needed), and by scripting three simple word processors, they would allow Act to really become the de-facto standard?

I “had” hundreds of seats running licensed copies of Act. Now I have five. Get the point? Act is no longer attractive.

    What a waste.

There have been a lot of discussions about ACT! and 64-bit operating systems. Would you be kind enough to summarize and let me know if I am correct? Here are my questions (right now, I have ACT! 2008 (v10):

    1. It looks as if 2008 will NOT run on 64-bit OS — Yes?

    2. It look as if 2009 will (Yes?), so let's assume I upgrade.

    3. Does this mean I must upgrade ACT! on my laptop as well (which is still 32-bit). I sync the two when I take a trip.

    4. This one has nothing to do with ACT!, but is there a Web site anywhere that you've found to lists which software (and versions) will run on 64-bit systems? There are a lot of reasons to go to 64-bit.

    Thanks very much!
